South-Mugirango Constituency

South Mugirango constituency is synonymous with Gucha south sub county which was one of the districts created in 2007 from the larger Gucha district.
South Mugirango constituency borders Bonchari constituency to the North, Bomachoge Chache to the East, Kilgoris to the south and Rongo constituency to the west.
The constituency has two sub-counties namely, Gucha South and Etago Sub County, with four divisions, thirteen locations and twenty seven sub-locations.
The constituency headquarter is situated in Gucha south sub county headquarters Nyamarambe.
According to the national Bureau of statistics (KNBS),the constituency has a total population of estimated at 186,645 persons with 67,345registered voters in 2017.The quality of life is generally low with about 51% poverty rate which is higher than the national average of 43.8%.The average life expectancy in the constituency is estimated at 56years and the inhabitants are generally prone to malaria,diarrhea and respiratory infections.
The primary school enrolment rate in the constituency is estimated at 76.4%, with a teacher to pupil ratio at 1:50 and an average Primary to Secondary School Transition rate of 90% ,the Constituency has no functioning public institution of tertiary institution to boast of other than the privately owned St.Camilus School of Nursing , domiciled at Tabaka mission hospital.
Adult literacy level stands at 71.5% and the overall illiteracy level is estimated at 13.5%.The constituency is home to diverse cultures but mostly inhabited by persons of Abagusii Origin.
The Constituency has an altitude of 1500m above sea level and predominantly a rural agricultural producer of food and cash crop e.g. maize, sugar cane, tea and coffee, animal husbandry and fish farming. The land is generally arable with good climatic condition.
The constituency is Famous as the only soapstone producer in the entire Kenya the famous Tabaka Soapstone and carvings is exported to the European countries which earns the country foreign exchange .
